Why Chocolate Is So Expensive This Easter in Australia (And Where Your Money Could Be Better Spent)

If you’ve been browsing supermarket aisles lately, you may have noticed something shocking: chocolate prices are higher than ever. That familiar bag of Easter eggs that used to feel like an affordable treat now comes with serious sticker shock. But why has chocolate become so expensive in Australia, and is it still worth it?

The Global Cocoa Crunch

The main culprit? Cocoa.

Global cocoa prices surged over the past two years, reaching historic highs of over US$12,000 per tonne in 2024. Supply struggles in West Africa—the source of roughly 70% of the world’s cocoa—are a major factor. Poor weather, crop disease, and aging trees have reduced harvests, while climate change has made conditions even less predictable.

When demand stays strong but supply drops, prices inevitably rise—and that cost ends up on supermarket shelves.

Easter Makes It Worse

Easter is one of the peak chocolate-selling seasons, so price increases hit hard. Some Easter chocolates are now up to 33% more expensive per 100g than last year, and many products are smaller too.

This combination of higher prices and shrinkflation (smaller portions for the same cost) has shoppers questioning whether chocolate is really worth the splurge. Will prices drop anytime soon? Not likely. While cocoa prices have slightly eased from their peak, experts predict elevated prices will continue due to ongoing climate pressures and long-term supply challenges. So for the foreseeable future, Easter chocolate may remain a pricey indulgence.

Short-Lived Pleasure vs. Lasting Value

Chocolate is undeniably enjoyable, but the thrill is fleeting. A bag of Easter eggs disappears in minutes, leaving only a dent in your wallet.

In contrast, investing in natural health and skincare products offers long-term benefits you can actually see and feel. Ingredients like Kakadu plum, rich in vitamin C, help brighten and nourish skin, delivering a glow that lasts far beyond a sugar rush.

A Smarter Easter Treat

This Easter, consider choosing something that delivers lasting value. A small shift in spending, like opting for a natural brightening serum or some rejuvenating Aloe Vera moisturiser instead of overpriced chocolate, can reward you with healthier skin and a radiant glow for weeks, not minutes. Chocolate might bring a quick thrill, but your future self will thank you for choosing products that truly benefit you.
